Join us for “An American Conversation” with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi about her new book, The Art of Power.

Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful woman in American political history, tells the story of her transformation from housewife to House Speaker—how she became a master legislator, a key partner to presidents, and the most visible leader of the Trump resistance.

In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care. She describes the perseverance, persuasion, and respect for her members that it took to succeed, but also the joy of seeing America change for the better. Among the best-prepared and hardest working Speakers in history, Pelosi worked to find common ground, or stand her ground, with presidents from Bush to Biden. She also shares moving moments with soldiers sent to the front lines, women who inspired her, and human rights activists who fought by her side.

The woman who has been lauded by her opposition as “the most powerful Speaker” ever shows us why she is not afraid of a good fight. The Art of Power is about the fighting spirit that has always animated her, and the historic legacy that spirit has produced.

While they last, hardcover copies of The Art of Leadership may be ordered with your online event registration. The first 250 to order will receive books autographed by Nancy Pelosi. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.

This is a free online event, but registration is required.

THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYONE

6:30 PM CT – Onstage & Online
Unity Temple on the Plaza
707 W. 47th St., Kansas City, Missouri

Celebrate Women’s History Month with New York Times bestselling author Meryl Gordon and her “winsome…ode to an overlooked fixture of midcentury American politics.” (Publishers Weekly)

Perle Mesta was a force to be reckoned with. In her heyday, this wealthy globe-trotting Washington widow was one of the most famous women in America, garnering as much media attention as Eleanor Roosevelt. Renowned for her world-class parties featuring politicians and celebrities, she was a regular at the White House for four decades and had very close ties to three presidents—Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson.

A pioneering supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment, she was a prodigious Democratic fundraiser and rescued Harry Truman’s financially flailing 1948 campaign. In return, he named Perle as envoy to Luxembourg, only the third woman in American history to hold a diplomatic post. The historic appointment, and the larger-than-life diplomat, inspired a hit musical based on Perle’s life, Call Me Madam. The show starred Ethel Merman, ran on Broadway for two years, and later became a movie.

In this intensely researched biography, author Meryl Gordon chronicles Perle’s lavish life and society adventures in Newport, Manhattan and Washington, while highlighting her important, but nearly forgotten contribution to American politics and the feminist movement.

Meryl Gordon is an award-winning journalist and tenured NYU journalism professor. She is the author of four biographies; two have been New York Times bestsellers. As a magazine writer and TV, radio and newspaper reporter, she has covered a wide array of topics including national politics, influential New Yorkers, fashion, food, celebrities and pioneering women. Her work has appeared in New York Magazine, Vanity Fair and The New York Times.

Rainy Day Books will host an onsite book sale for in-person attendees.

This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Click below to choose in-person or livestream registration.

Women Rising Series

FREEDOM TO SERVE AND THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT

ONSTAGE & ONLINE
6 p.m. Wine Reception | 6:30 p.m. (CT) Program
Truman Forum, Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch
4801 Main St., Kansas City, Missouri

The fourth installment of our popular Women Rising series will focus its lens on another first: the Six Triple Eight. The 6888th Central Directory Postal Battalion was the only unit of mostly-Black American women to be sent overseas during the Second World War. The battalion’s exemplary service and valor helped inspire President Truman to take two significant steps in the journey towards equal rights: Executive Order 9981 desegregating the U.S. military and the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act.

To tell their story, Women Rising will bring to the stage another history maker—Col. Eries L.G. Mentzer, the first Black woman to command Maxwell Airforce Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
