The Truman Library is accepting applications for its Summer 2025 regional teacher workshop, co-hosted by Ford's Theater. Local teachers are encouraged to apply for this free oratory-based professional workshop for 4-12 teachers. Show more

This three-day workshop offers educators the opportunity to engage with primary sources, scholarly insights, public speaking and theater arts-integrated strategies that will enrich classroom discourse and teaching on presidential leadership, civil rights, and civics education.

This is a commuter event. Participants are responsible for their own housing and transportation. Lunch is provided, and free all-day parking is available onsite. Participants must pay a $100 refundable deposit to secure their place in the intensive. Deposits are refunded upon successful completion of the program.

Summer Teacher Conference

Exploring the U.S. Presidency and Democracy: 250 Years of Igniting and Impeding Rights

Applications open January 6, 2025 for the Truman Library’s annual Summer Teacher Conference, open to K-12 teachers nationwide. Join us for a five-day professional development workshop designed to deepen understanding of American democracy and the presidency, strengthen classroom best practices, and connect historical relevance to student learning. The Truman Library’s nationally recognized educators will be joined by scholars from other presidential sites, including Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library.

Teachers submit $100 entrance fee upon acceptance. Thanks to the generosity of our community partners in education, the Summer Teacher Conference includes breakfast, lunch and private hotel accommodations for out-of-state teachers.

Teacher In-service Programs and Professional Development

The Truman Library's team of educators are available to make school-based presentations on historical methods, primary source documents, and cutting-edge scholarship on the Truman presidency and the major events of the era, including the end of World War II, the Cold War, civil rights, the Middle East and much more. Let The White House Decision Center host your next teacher in-service. Our workshops are designed to help teachers bring exciting hands-on history to their students. Step into Truman's West Wing and have fun while learning how experiential learning, role playing, and primary sources can be combined for a memorable and valuable learning experience. Show more
