Truman Library Institute Welcomes New Members to Board of Directors | April 29, 2015
The Harry S. Truman Library Institute, nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, welcomes four new members to its Board of Directors.
Elected to the Board on April 24, 2015 for three-year terms were Kay Martin, Dennis Merrill, Ph.D., Adam P. Sachs and Timothy W. Triplett. They join a committed group of nonprofit volunteer leaders led by chairman John J. Sherman; vice chairs Elizabeth T. Solberg and Clyde F. Wendel; secretary Herbert M. Kohn; and treasurer John A. MacDonald; as well as Honorary Trustees and National Advisory Council members who include The Hon. John C. Danforth, Walter Isaacson, The Hon. James W. Symington, Beth K. Smith, Henry W. Bloch, Jonathan M. Kemper and Morton I. Sosland.
“That these outstanding and very busy individuals have committed their talents and influence to further the work of the Truman Library Institute is a testament to the enduring importance of my grandfather’s presidential library and legacy,” said Clifton Truman Daniel, eldest grandson of President Truman and honorary chair of the Truman Library Institute. “These individuals bring invaluable insights and resources to help us in our efforts to advance my grandfather’s legacy and to expand access to the world-class museum, national forums and acclaimed educational experiences at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum.”
Kay Martin is a respected and experienced community volunteer in Greater Kansas City. A professional educator, she has served on the Boards of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation and the Johnson County Library Foundation, on the managing board of Children’s TLC and on multiple benefit boards for Kansas City Young Matrons, Junior League and Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. She currently serves on the supporting Board of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. A longtime supporter of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, Kay and her late husband, Tom Martin, served as Event Chairs for 2008 Wild About Harry, the Truman Library Institute’s annual fund raising dinner.
Dennis Merrill is a University of Missouri Curator’s Professor and an internationally recognized expert on the Truman administration. In addition to authoring two highly respected monographs, Bread and the Ballot: The United States and India’s Economic Development, 1947-1963 and Negotiating Paradise: U.S. Tourism and Empire in Twentieth-Century Latin America, he has also assumed editorship of the leading classroom anthology/documents collection for use in undergraduate courses in the history of U.S. foreign relations and served as general editor of the magisterial 35-volume Documentary History of the Truman Presidency. He has served on the Truman Library Institute’s Committee on Research, Scholarship, and Education, Grants Subcommittee since 1999.
Adam P. Sachs is a partner at Husch Blackwell LLP. Drawing upon years of experience in senior legal and legislative positions on Capitol Hill, Adam advises on government relations and policy for a variety of industries, including energy and natural resources. Previously, he served as the chief Democratic counsel and staff director for the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations; chief counsel and staff director to former House Majority Whip and Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn; associate counsel for former Senator Paul Simon of Illinois; and senior legislative assistant for former Representative Lane Evans of Illinois. Adam was awarded Global International Magazine Global Award, Gaming Law – Attorney of the Year in Missouri, 2014, 2015.
Timothy W. Triplett joined Black & Veatch in 2008 and serves as General Counsel, President of the Legal and Risk Management Division and as Secretary of the Black & Veatch Board of Directors. In these roles, he guides all legal and risk management services on a wide variety of commercial matters. He also serves as Executive Sponsor for the company’s business expansion in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries of the Middle East. Tim is a regular speaker at domestic and international construction law seminars and the author of numerous professional publications. In the community, he is a member of the Business Council Steering Committee for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and acts as Executive Sponsor for the KCPT Reads and Climate Change mentoring programs. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Working Subcommittee Group on Global Competitiveness for KC Rising. In October 2013, Tim Triplett was named to the Legal 500’s “Corporate Counsel 100,” a listing of the top most 100 influential in-house counsel in the United States. Since 2003, he also has been named in Best Lawyers in America.
The board of directors is the governing body for the Truman Library Institute, the member-supported, nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, one of 13 presidential libraries of the National Archives and Records Administration. The Truman Library Institute draws on President Truman’s legacy to enrich the public understanding of history, the presidency and America’s unique form of government. This mission is achieved through world-class museum exhibits, research grants, public programming and nationally acclaimed education programs serving more than 35,000 students and teachers each year.
